A Brief Introduction to the Two Academies

The Guangzhou Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Guangdong Academy of Science (hereafter abbreviated as The Two Academies) work as a joint institution under the same staff. The Guangzhou Branch of CAS was founded in December, 1958 and was combined with the Wuhan Branch as the South Central Branch, which was abrogated in 1969. The Guangzhou Branch was resumed in May, 1978. Guangdong Academy of Science was established in January, 1978.
The Guangzhou Branch operates as a local subsidiary of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which coordinates the institutes of Chinese Academy of Science in Guangdong, including South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, South China Botanical Garden, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion, Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology, Guangzhou Chemistry Co. Ltd., Guangzhou Electronic Technology Co. Ltd., and Institute of Subtropical Agriculture (based in Hunan). Guangdong Academy of Science(GAS) is directly affiliated to Guangdong Provincial Government, supervising such institutions as Guangzhou Institute of Geography, Guangdong Entomological Institute, Guangdong Institute of Microbiology , Guangdong Institute of Eco-Environment and Soil Sciences, Automation Engineering R&M Centre of GAS, Guangdong Science and Technology Library.
By the end of 2008,The Two Academies has a registered staff of 3242 employees, including 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1 foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 4 members of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences, and 2446 science researchers. Of all the employees, 842 people are holders of advanced technical titles, 704 members are PhD holders and 648 members are Master Degree holders.
There are nine major research domains in the Two Academies: 1.Tropical Marine Resources, Environment and Biology, 2.Tropical and Subtropical Plants, Animals and Micro-organisms, 3.Eco-Construction of South China, Pollution Control, and sustainable development, 4.New and Renewable Energy, 5.Bio-Medicine and Health, 6.Advanced Manufacturing and Technology Integration, 7.Agri-ecology and Applicable Technologies, 8.IT, 9.New Materials
There are 30 key laboratories of either state or provincial level in the Two Academies: 2 state level (one being collaborated), 10 key laboratories of CAS, 13 provincial level key laboratories, and 5 provincial public laboratories. We have built 18 field working stations, of which 7 are national key stations. We also have 12 types of various science education bases, and three marine investigation ships. Our library holds more than one million books.
There are 28 subsidiary Master programs and 15 subsidiary PhD programs, and 4 post-doctoral programs. In 2008, there are 1742 graduates studying in the Two Academies.
Since 1978,the Two Academies have fulfilled 2695 research programs,of which 849 won awards of ministerial level or above. In the past 11 years, the amount of our patent application and awarding rate has maintained the top position among the research institutions in Guangdong. The Two Academies have signed long-term collaborative agreements with more than 30 local governments or science institutions in Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan Provinces, and have established 7 centers of Technology transfer in Fuoshan and Shantou City, promoting the application of abundant new high-tech production, thus contributing to the development of local economy and other aspects of the society.
